Guido Bonatti
On Longevity*
«Many
men have reached a very advanced age: of these I have
seen in my time only a certain Ricardus, who said that
he had been at the court of Charlemagne and was 400 years
old. And it is said also that there was another, who lived
at the time of Jesus Christ and was called Johannes Buttadeus.
Because he had driven the Lord along when he was being
led to the Crucifixion, the Master made clear to him:
«You shall await me, until I come again.»
This Ricardus I saw at Ravenna in the year 1223; Johannes,
on a pilgrimage to Santiago, passed through Forli in the
year of our Lord 1267.»
*from Guido Bonatti: De astronomia tractatus
X, written late 13th century, first printed 1491 in
Augsburg.
The quotation is from George K. Anderson: The Legend
of the Wandering Jew (p 22).
For his translation it seems that he has used the 1550
edition, printed in Basel.
